Scientific Reason For Why Do You Always Feel Tired

It Might Not Be Your Diet, Thyroid, or Iron Levels

Derek P. was 63 years old but always full of energy. He was sharp, cheerful, and never seemed to slow down. People even called him “Mr. Enthusiasm” because of his upbeat nature. But then, things changed. Derek started feeling tired every day. He needed a nap just to get through the afternoon and barely played golf anymore. His memory wasn’t as sharp, and he started feeling sad about things that never used to bother him.

When he went to his regular doctor, the results looked normal. All his tests came back fine, and his doctor said it might just be due to age. But Derek didn’t feel like himself at all.

After months with no answers, Derek came to me. I gave him a full check-up and ordered some special tests that looked at his stress hormone levels. One test involved laying him flat on a table, then slowly raising it while checking his heart rate and blood pressure. It’s called a “tilt test,” and Derek tested positive.

Once I saw the results, I started him on a simple natural plan. Just two weeks later, Derek felt like his old self again. His energy came back. His sadness was gone. He could focus better, and he was back to playing golf weekly.

This big change happened because of a breakthrough I’ll explain shortly.

But first, let me share who I am. I’m Dr. Frank Shallenberger, a medical doctor with over 35 years of experience. I also write for the Second Opinion Newsletter. While I’m trained in traditional medicine, I believe in natural methods whenever they work best.

Why You Still Feel Tired Even When Tests Look Normal

Derek didn’t know it, but he was showing signs of a very common health problem. It’s often ignored by regular doctors. And even those who know about it don’t always treat it the right way.

This problem makes many people feel tired for no clear reason. It can also cause brain fog, low mood, sugar cravings, and a weak immune system. Some people get headaches, allergies, and struggle to recover after stress.

It’s not a heart issue. It’s not a brain issue and it’s not even just part of getting older.

The Real Issue: Your Adrenal Glands

Your adrenal glands are small, triangle-shaped organs that sit on top of your kidneys. They might be small, but they play a very big role in your body.

These glands make over 50 types of hormones. Many of these hormones help with your energy, focus, immune health, and even your sex drive. But most of all, your adrenal glands help your body deal with stress.

When you are in danger or feel pressure, your body reacts fast. This is called the “fight-or-flight” response. Your adrenal glands release stress hormones like adrenaline, cortisol, and DHEA. Your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises, and your body gets ready to face the challenge. You feel alert, focused, and ready to act.

After the danger is over, your adrenaline levels drop. Then cortisol and DHEA help your body recover and return to normal. This is how your body handles short-term stress, like getting into a minor car accident or taking an exam.

But there is a problem…

Modern Stress Wears Out Your Adrenal Glands

Today’s world is full of stress. People are busy with work, family, and daily problems. Many feel pressure from bills, job deadlines, or worry about their kids. Even small things like traffic or waiting in line can cause stress.

All this stress puts a lot of pressure on your adrenal glands and therefore, these glands try to keep up, but over time they get tired. The more stress you face, the harder your adrenals work. After a while, they start to slow down. When this happens, your body begins to run out of energy.

One of the first signs is trouble sleeping. You might also feel moody, sad, or forgetful. You may not know why. Headaches in the afternoon, weight gain, high blood sugar, and slow recovery from colds can also be signs of adrenal fatigue.

But the most common symptom is deep tiredness. This is not the kind of tiredness that sleep fixes. It feels like your body has no strength left. Most people feel this crash around 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

I know this feeling myself. A few years ago, I had been working long hours, sleeping less, and drinking too much coffee. I also have allergies, and that season had made them worse. One day I sat on the couch, completely worn out. The TV was playing something I didn’t like, and the remote was right in front of me. But I didn’t have the energy to reach out and change the channel. I just looked out the window.

I wasn’t sleepy and I just felt too weak to move. That feeling is a clear sign of adrenal burnout.

When I share this with patients, many tell me they feel the exact same way. This kind of deep fatigue is common in people with tired adrenal glands.

In fact, more than half of the people I see with allergies, tiredness, or low mood are actually dealing with adrenal stress.

Your Energy and Health Depend on Strong Adrenal Glands

Many people think adrenal problems are rare. But that’s not true. Because of daily stress, lack of sleep, and habits like drinking coffee and energy drinks, this issue is very common. In fact, experts say around 80% of people will face adrenal fatigue at some point. Yet most regular doctors still don’t fully recognize it.

The good news is, adrenal fatigue doesn’t have to last forever. You can bring your adrenal glands back to full health in just a few months. The key is to give them the right support and enough rest to recover.

To help your adrenals heal, I suggest four key nutrients. These work together to repair and support your adrenal function. Let me tell you about the first one.

The “Anti-Stress” Vitamin

You may have heard of vitamins B6 and B12. But there’s another one that’s just as important—Vitamin B5, also called pantothenic acid.

Most people with adrenal fatigue don’t have enough of this vitamin. Studies show that Vitamin B5 helps your body make stress hormones like cortisol and progesterone. This makes it easier for your body to handle pressure.

Vitamin B5 also helps reduce that anxious feeling you get when you’re under stress. It does this by boosting dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical in your brain. When your dopamine levels go up, you feel calmer and more balanced.

Another benefit of Vitamin B5 is that it helps your cells make energy. This means your brain, heart, and whole body get more power to function better during the day.

Pantothenic acid is the first nutrient I suggest for tired adrenal glands. But there’s another helpful nutrient I’ll tell you about next. It works perfectly with Vitamin B5 to help bring your energy back.

How to Naturally Balance Stress Hormones

Licorice root is another helpful nutrient for your adrenal glands. It contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, which turns into glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) in your body. GA slows down how fast your body breaks down cortisol. This gives your adrenal glands extra support when you’re under stress.

Licorice root also helps control a hormone called aldosterone. This hormone keeps your blood pressure, fluid levels, and electrolytes in balance.

If aldosterone gets too high, your blood pressure may rise, and your potassium levels can drop. This might cause muscle pain or tingling in your hands and feet.

If aldosterone gets too low — which is common in people with adrenal issues — you may feel dizzy, tired, or get a fast heartbeat when standing up. Licorice root helps bring these levels back to normal. It can even calm an upset stomach during stressful times.

So now we have two strong supporters for adrenal health: Vitamin B5 and licorice root.

But there’s another nutrient many people don’t talk about, even though it’s just as important for energy and adrenal support.

Tired Adrenals Can Affect Your Liver, Too

Yes, it’s true — your liver and your adrenal glands are connected. Both work hard to remove toxins from your body. Every day, your body deals with pollution, food chemicals, and other harmful substances. This constant stress makes your adrenal glands and liver work overtime.

To help support this detox system, I recommend a natural ingredient called liver concentrate. It’s known for its strong cleansing effects. It also gives your body a good amount of B vitamins, protein, iron, and enzymes.

One study from the University of Southern California tested how long people could swim. Those who took B vitamins alone could swim for only 13 minutes. But those who added liver concentrate kept swimming for over an hour — and some were still going after two hours!

This shows how powerful liver concentrate can be when it comes to energy and endurance.

Now let’s talk about one last nutrient I always recommend. It may sound a bit different, but it plays a big role in helping your adrenals rest and heal faster.

A Natural Way to Strengthen Adrenals and Get Essential Minerals

One very effective way to support your adrenal glands is by using something called glandular extracts. These are made from animal glands and contain small amounts of the same hormones, proteins, minerals, and vitamins found in human adrenal glands. One of the best types is called Adrenal Cortex Extract.

This method is not new. It goes back to Ancient Greek times and is still used today in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In modern times, it became popular about 100 years ago. A Swiss doctor named Paul Niehans discovered that dried thyroid gland helped people with thyroid problems, and dried adrenal gland helped those with adrenal issues like Addison’s Disease.

Doctors found that glandular extracts helped weak glands work better. But even though it worked well, the method was mostly forgotten once new chemical medicines took over in the mid-1900s. At that time, research on natural glandular therapy stopped almost completely.

Now, however, some health researchers are looking at these natural extracts again—especially for how they affect the immune system. If your adrenal glands are not making enough hormones, Adrenal Cortex Extract can give them the building blocks they need to work better.

Together, these four nutrients form my top list for adrenal recovery:

  • Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
  • Licorice Root
  • Liver Concentrate
  • Adrenal Cortex Extract

I suggest these to every patient I see who shows signs of adrenal fatigue.

Don’t Stop Yet — Stress Isn’t Going Anywhere

Let’s be real. Most of the stress in your life isn’t going to disappear overnight. Bills still need paying. Work won’t slow down. Life just keeps coming. That’s why it’s not enough to just fix your adrenal glands once and forget about them.

If you really want to feel better long term, you need to guard yourself against the stress that wore you down in the first place. That means cutting out sugar, ditching caffeine, getting decent sleep, moving your body a bit, and doing what you can to keep pain under control.

But there’s more. I also suggest using adaptogens — special herbs that help your body adjust to stress. What’s neat about them is that they know what your body needs. If you’re tense, they help you chill. If you’re wiped out, they give you a little push.

They also keep your immune system strong and help you stay healthier overall. If you’ve been wondering why you are tired all the time, adaptogens might be part of the answer.

Meet Cordyceps: An Ancient Herb with Modern Power

One adaptogen I always come back to is Cordycep and it’s been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. In the West, it became famous in the ’90s when some Chinese runners broke world records — their coach said they were training at high altitudes and taking Cordyceps.

People got curious, and soon scientists were studying it.

Turns out, Cordyceps really can boost your energy and it also helps your body make more ATP, which is the fuel your cells use. One study even found a 55% increase in ATP with Cordyceps. That’s a big deal if you constantly feel drained.

It also improves how your body uses oxygen. One study showed a 40% jump in oxygen absorption. In a test with rats, the ones that got Cordyceps swam longer — from 75 minutes to 90 minutes. That’s impressive.

But there’s more. Cordyceps helps your body fight off colds and infections by boosting natural killer cells — these are your body’s first line of defense. If you get sick a lot or take forever to recover, this herb could help.

And in another study? Cordyceps actually raised hydrocortisone levels — that’s the hormone your adrenals use to handle stress. So if your adrenals are running on empty, Cordyceps gives them a push in the right direction.

Coming up next, I’ll talk about another adaptogen that can keep your mind clear and calm — especially when life gets messy.

Stay Sharp and Energized — Even Under Pressure

There’s another herb I often recommend for adrenal support. It’s called Eleuthero, also known as Siberian Ginseng. It helps your body deal with stress better by supporting how your adrenal glands release stress hormones.

Here’s what happens: when you face stress, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol. But when those get used up too fast, you crash — and that’s when the tiredness kicks in. Eleuthero works by slowing down how those hormones are released, so your energy lasts longer and your body doesn’t wear out as quickly.

In one study, researchers tested how Eleuthero affects stress. They gave 45 people a tough memory test and checked their heart rates and blood pressure. Everyone’s numbers went up — no surprise there.

Then, half the group took Eleuthero for 30 days, and the other half took a placebo. After a month, they took the test again. This time, the people who took Eleuthero stayed calm — their heart rate and blood pressure stayed steady. But the placebo group? Their stress levels spiked again.

That’s a big reason Eleuthero is such a strong tool for people wondering why you are tired all the time. It helps you stay calm and alert — even in tough moments.

Other studies show it can:

  • Increase alertness
  • Boost the immune system
  • Improve athletic performance

In fact, Soviet athletes and astronauts used Eleuthero to stay strong during high-stress events. It also helps regulate brain chemicals that affect mood, anxiety, and sleep; therefore, it may help with focus, better rest, and fewer mood swings.

Eleuthero really is a powerful herb. But there’s still one more adaptogen I want to share with you — and it’s one of the best when it comes to deep adrenal repair.
